Global Infrastructure Outlook - Key Highlights

  • Published:Thursday, March 30, 2017

This Key Highlights document summarizes the key findings from the” Global Infrastructure Outlook”, a report which provides an in-depth assessment of infrastructure spending, the drivers and barriers to infrastructure growth and the major projects in the construction pipeline.

In terms of spending as a percentage of GDP in recent years, China, India and other emerging Asian countries have been driving much of the growth in infrastructure spending. China is of particular note here, combining high spending as a percentage of GDP with a large scope for infrastructure spending, given its economy accounts for 18% of global GDP. While better than average in most regions, 50% of global GDP is represented by Western Europe and the US and Canada, which are all seeing ongoing muted infrastructure spending. This is not an unexpected result, these developed parts of the world have a far higher quality infrastructure base, and less need to invest across all sectors, but in particular basic needs infrastructure, such as the water and sewerage and some parts of the electricity and power and telecommunications sectors.
